Histoire du Brad
Tenor Trombonist Brad Rollans was born in Fort Worth Texas on April 6, 1983. After a few years of potty training and learning how to chew with his mouth closed Brad entered Junior High and began his musical studies. Choosing the Trombone as his instrument of choice was easy for him; he had received both a King 604 Trombone and a Tenor Saxophone as a hand me down from his grandmother. Since Brad's younger sister had already determined she was going to play the saxophone Brad was left with a choice of a Trombone or learning how to play spoons. Since spoons are not featured much in concert bands nor do they get to march at the front of the parade Brad's choice was easy. He played Trombone all through Junior High and High School, studying with great trombonists such as Daren McHenry, Bass Trombonist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Dallas based Bass Trombonist A.G. Robeson, who played under Stan Kenton. Brad lived and played in Arlington until he graduated in May of 2001 and ran off to the flatness that is Lubbock Texas and Texas Tech University. At Texas Tech he was a member of the Goin' Band from Raider Land, Texas Tech's 400+ member marching band and was also a member of the Jazz Ensemble. After a year of dust, fun and raining mud, Brad moved to the University of Texas in Austin where he quickly dug deep into his studies, becoming very pale and emaciated from a lack of natural sunlight. He played in numerous small jazz combos and actively subbed with numerous bands around Austin including: The Chapparral Dixielanders, The Big Jug Band, and numerous small Jazz combos. Brad was also an active member of the University Jazz Ensemble directed by John Mills. After a year of burnt orange cows the itch to do something new struck again, and much to the horror of his mother Brad hopped on a flight to Southampton England and spent the next year studying music and Ancient Mediterranean Seafaring at the University of Southampton. During his time in the UK Brad ran numerous small combos and played in Many different groups. He played lead Trombone in the Southampton University Jazz Orchestra, ran his own Quintets and Trios and subbed in countless groups. He was a proud member of the British Musicians Union and studied under Steven Hayes who resides in Bournemouth. Between practicing and partaking in the vibrant pub scene Brad managed to travel to Copenhagen to study under the great Danish Trombonist Erling Kroner, who is currently making waves in Denmark with his Tango influenced Jazz. Brad also had the wonderful opportunity to meet and chat with numerous trombone players and musicians who he came across while abroad including: Mose Allison, Conrad Herwig, Frank Lacy, Mark Nightengale and many others. Brad is a graduate of The University of Texas in Austin and received his Bachelors of Arts in Music in May of 2006. While in Austin he studied with Ron Westray and Randy Zimmerman. In addition to playing, Brad was an active teacher in the area and had a small studio consisting of both Junior and High School students. With his friend Connor Brace he co-owned the Austin Jazz Guide which helped promote Jazz in the Austin area. Never one to let his mother remain calm Brad once again departed the United states and made hundreds of students suffer each week as he taught English in France. From October of 2006 until June of 2007 he lived in the small city of Montlucon and was an active member of both the Acoustic Jazz band and the Big Chabbada Big Band of Domerat. Il se manques tout ses amies en France! After his payed vacation in Europe Brad returned to Austin, Texas. He is currently working as a booking agent in downtown Austin bringing Children's Theater and Performance groups to hundreds of thousands of people a year. When not at his day job Brad continues to compose, play music write and make giant Frisbees out of spandex and irrigation tubing. |
